Thermal Imaging Applications in Steelmaking Production Processes

Steel - BOF/EVA Furnace Slag Detection Application

[Application Background]

The steelmaking process includes raw material preparation, steelmaking in a converter/electric furnace, refining, tapping and casting, and subsequent processing. Tapping involves pouring molten steel from the converter/electric furnace into a ladle. To improve steel quality, reduce costs, and increase efficiency, the slag released during the tapping process must be detected and identified. This improves steel purity, reduces slag erosion on the ladle’s refractory materials, and minimizes alloy loss and improves alloy element recovery.

[Pain Points]

The traditional approach involves experienced technicians visually observing the steel flow. When the slag is visible, its color is noticeably brighter than that of pure steel. Upon observing the slag, they quickly close the gates to prevent excessive slag from entering the ladle. However, the harsh production environment and the bright steel flow can cause irreversible eye damage after prolonged observation. Manually closing the gates varies widely, making quality assurance impossible. Steel mills face the need for technological and process upgrades.

[Thermal Imaging Applications]

1. Technical Route: Installing an ultra-high-temperature thermal imaging camera at the tapping hole monitors the steel flow in real time and implements a slag identification algorithm. The integrated client software displays the tapping image and slag content in real time. Combined with a slide plate to block slag, this system enables fully automatic slag discharge alarms and control.

2. Recommended Products: Thermal Imaging High-Temperature Core Integration, Ultra-High-Temperature and High-Resistant Drum Machine Integration

3. User Benefits: Avoids manual injuries and improves the working environment; effectively improves molten steel quality and purity; and reduces refractory loss in the ladle.
